Where locals drink coffee in Santa Cruz de La Palma

As at April 2026 – updated regularly

Santa Cruz de La Palma has surprised me anew on every visit. You won’t find the best cafés in Santa Cruz de La Palma straight away – but if you turn off the colonial promenade into the side streets, you’ll discover a café culture that still belongs entirely to the locals. No mass tourism, no menus tailored to tourists – just genuine Café de La Palma in your cup and Miel de palma for breakfast. That is the true charm of this small island capital.

Coffee breaks with sea views and local colour

Anyone visiting cafés in Santa Cruz de La Palma should be aware of the mealtimes from the Canary Islands: morning coffee is drunk early, whilst the lunch rush is at its peak between 2 pm and 4 pm. A ‚menú del día‘ here costs between 10 and 14 euros and offers the best value for money on the whole island. It’s still wise to carry cash in smaller establishments – not all cafés in the side streets away from the Avenida Marítima accept card payments. A knowledge of Spanish helps, as menus are often written in Spanish only.
