It was an idea that came about on a whim. It grew into a business. Today, the name is misleading. Because what started as „Teneriffa News“ has long since become the most widely read German-language news portal for the whole of the Canary Islands.
The online medium with the widest reach in the Canary Islands
Due to the high number of winter visitors to the Canary Islands, the readership also varies seasonally. Regardless of this, Teneriffa News remains the most widely read German-language news portal in the Canary Islands across all seasons:

Teneriffa News is therefore the news portal for all lovers of the Canary Islands.
History of Teneriffa News
The idea came to the current editor, Johannes Bornewasser, in 2011. Shortly afterwards, he deliberately launched the portal as a purely online service. The quality of some of the German-language media available in Tenerife at the time deeply troubled the trained journalist. He decided to set up his own news portal with high standards for its content.
Teneriffa News subsequently grew to become the news outlet for Tenerife and, later, for all the Canary Islands. Our roots remain in Tenerife, but our hearts – and our attention – belong to all the Canary Islands.
The editorial team
Further information about our founder can be found in his author profile. We are also supported by freelancers, photographers, guest authors and former contributors, who are based across several of the Canary Islands. Detailed information about authors and photographers, as well as the images we use, can be found here in the overview of all our authors.
Our journalistic principles
Teneriffa News reports independently, impartially and critically. Our editorial team is funded exclusively through external reach-based advertising – which is unrelated to our content – and membership fees from our readers; we do not receive funding from political parties, government bodies or interest groups.
We do not publish paid opinion pieces and always clearly label advertising. Editorial content is produced without any influence from third parties and adheres to journalistic standards such as diligence, verification of sources and fairness.
Teneriffa News in the international media
Teneriffa News’s expertise is now even sought after internationally. We are regularly approached for interviews and expert opinions, particularly on migration, as the following examples show:
Teneriffa News on Swiss radio discussing migration (14 October 2023):
Teneriffa News on Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, discussing migration (7 January 2025):
We are also approached for interviews on other topics, as the following example shows:

Paid content on Teneriffa News
In November 2020, we became the first German-language news portal in the Canary Islands to introduce the option to take out a membership. This is intended to ensure that the portal maintains its high standards for content and authors even in the age of AI, whilst at the same time becoming less reliant on advertising. In return, depending on their membership tier, our readers see fewer or even no adverts at all. Technically, we rely on WallCentive, the best and fairest WordPress paywall on the market.
Handling of photos, graphics and logos
Teneriffa News expressly refrains from using AI-generated images. In doing so, we adhere to the guidelines set out by the German Press Council regarding the use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms. For the creation of graphics, we use the service provided by VistaCreate. This service produces hand-drawn logos and graphics – and therefore expressly no AI-generated images.
