The Canary Island of La Palma is situated in the north-west of the Canary Islands archipelago. Its neighbouring islands are La Gomera to the south-east and El Hierro to the south. La Palma belongs to the province of Tenerife. The island benefits from a mild climate all year round. The weather on La Palma is strongly influenced by the north-easterly trade winds. Furthermore, the Canary Current plays a significant role in shaping the climate and weather patterns.
Much like in Tenerife, the trade wind clouds mean that the north of the island of La Palma, in particular, receives more rainfall than the south. The trade wind clouds cross the ridge of La Palma at an altitude of around 1,450 metres at Cumbre Nueva, like a ‚cloud waterfall‘. There, in the west of the island, they eventually dissipate.
The associated rainfall creates a subtropical climate. However, there are also significant differences between the north and north-east on the one hand, and the south and south-west on the other. This is because the mountain range, which rises to over 2,400 metres, effectively divides the island into two climate zones.
The warmest months on La Palma
Although La Palma is characterised by a consistently pleasant climate, the warmest months generally fall between July and September. Average maximum temperatures then reach 25 to 27 degrees. However, peak temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius are still possible – particularly in the lower-lying regions of the Canary Islands.
The nights are usually relatively mild. Temperatures of around 20 degrees are considered normal. Thanks in part to the trade winds, the weather and climate on La Palma remain fairly consistent throughout the year.
The weather on La Palma
Humidity is particularly high at higher altitudes. By contrast, the western side of La Palma is significantly drier, even in winter. Recommendations for the best time to visit reflect this: depending on the purpose of your trip, it’s worth visiting at any time of year. For sports enthusiasts, the summer might already feel too warm for physical activity, whilst sun-worshippers will find plenty to enjoy almost all year round. Hikers, on the other hand, should definitely consider visiting in spring to marvel at the island’s wonderful display of spring blossoms.
The sea temperature varies with the season. On average, it ranges from 18 degrees in winter to 23 degrees in autumn, warmed by the summer months.
