Weather in Los Llanos de Aridane on La Palma
Los Llanos de Aridane is the second-largest town on La Palma. It lies in the Aridane Valley of the same name on the western side of the island. The town is situated at an altitude of around 330 metres and is a good three kilometres from the sea. This is crucial for the weather: the figures given here refer to the town, not the beach.
The western side of La Palma lies in the lee of the Cumbre Nueva. This mountain ridge divides the western Canary Islands lengthways into two halves. The north-easterly trade winds linger on the eastern side and bring rain there. The Aridane Valley is therefore generally the sunnier side of the island. Anyone driving over the pass from Santa Cruz de La Palma will quickly notice this change in the weather.
The weather station for this side of La Palma is located in Las Manchas, three kilometres away and at an altitude of 380 metres. It is therefore in the immediate vicinity and at almost the same height above sea level. The weather is therefore quite comparable. The beach forecast above, on the other hand, applies to Puerto Naos on the coast, where it is correspondingly warmer.
How the weather shapes Los Llanos de Aridane on La Palma
Los Llanos is not a typical beach town in the Canary Islands. Rather, it is the main town in a wide valley with banana plantations and a town centre featuring a plaza and laurel trees. Visitors arriving in Los Llanos de Aridane will notice the altitude most of all in the evening, when it cools down noticeably in the valley. On the coast at Puerto Naos, it can still be two to three degrees warmer, and even more so in winter.
It is a few kilometres from the town to the sea. The municipality’s beaches are Puerto Naos and Charco Verde. Both consist of black lava sand. Climate data has not been collected for long enough to compile a reliable table. However, the live weather data shown here and the seven-day forecast are accurate. The municipality’s best-known beach is Puerto Naos, followed by Playa de Charco Verde. Both bathing areas are officially registered. The water quality is considered good.
