Current weather report for Teneriffa

The current weather forecast for Tenerife

Tenerife is known as the ‚Island of Eternal Spring‘. The largest of the Canary Islands owes this reputation to its mild climate all year round. The weather in the south of Tenerife is considerably more stable than in the northern half of the island. Only in winter – and even then rather rarely – do north-westerly winds bring drizzle or south-westerly winds bring heavy showers to the regions between Adeje and Buenavista. On the remaining 250 or so days of the year, Tenerife enjoys plenty of sunshine. If tourists have any problems at all, it is more likely to be the wind. Even in bright sunshine, there are frequent trade winds or downdrafts from the higher elevations of the Canary Islands.

The winds from the sea, which bring the north its moisture-laden trade wind clouds, blow back down the slopes in the south. Whilst areas such as Los Gigantes and Playa del Medano – which is, unsurprisingly, very popular with surfers – are more affected than, for example, Costa Adeje, the wind can still blow quite strongly across the beaches there on some days.

However, the hotels and apartments in the south of Tenerife are just as unlikely to need heating as those in the north. Tenerife’s geographical location, its mild year-round climate and consistent temperatures generally make heating systems unnecessary. Even air conditioning is not necessarily required, as in summer – particularly in the north of Tenerife – the trade wind clouds provide sufficient shade, ensuring that average temperatures remain pleasant throughout the day.

Tenerife weather – now and in 7 days

At higher altitudes, however, it can quickly become cooler. The Canary Islands rule of thumb is: for every 100 metres of altitude, the temperature drops by around one degree Celsius. For this reason, temperatures in Mount Teide National Park (above 2,200 metres) often fall below freezing on many winter nights. And on the summit of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain at 3,715 metres (not 3,718 metres – you can find all the information about this error here), temperatures in winter usually hover around just one degree Celsius, even during the day.

Overall, the weather on Tenerife’s beaches is very pleasant, which means that people from Northern Europe in particular quickly feel very much at home there, both in summer and in winter.

14-day weather forecast for Tenerife

Despite all the satellite technology available, a 14-day forecast for the weather in Tenerife is virtually impossible. Above all, there has been no reliable weather radar since a devastating storm many years ago. The Island Council has now commissioned the installation of new equipment. However, it will be some time yet before the new weather radar comes online. In the meantime, our 7-day forecast for Tenerife above is a more reliable option.

Leaving meteorological technology aside, the weather situation in the Canary Islands, situated in the middle of the Atlantic, can only be reliably forecast for a maximum of one week anyway. That said, it is significantly more difficult to produce a reliable weather forecast for the north, around the city of Puerto de la Cruz. In the south, on the other hand, the weather on Tenerife is usually more consistent. The question there is generally not whether the sun will shine, but for how long.

Weather report: The warmest months on Tenerife

On Tenerife, the months between July and September are usually the warmest. During this period, average maximum temperatures rise to around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. However, peak temperatures can also exceed 35 degrees – particularly in the coastal areas and in the south of the largest of the Canary Islands. Nights, on the other hand, are usually mild. Temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees.

For the reasons mentioned above, we have opted to provide detailed information on the current weather in Tenerife, as well as a 7-day forecast (see above). Forecasts beyond this period are too vague for our liking and therefore do not meet Teneriffa News’s quality standards.

How warm is the sea on Tenerife?

The sea temperature on Tenerife is very consistent due to the island’s location in the middle of the Atlantic. You can find detailed information and the current sea temperature on our special page here.

Tenerife weather – when is the best time to visit?

From a purely meteorological point of view, the summer months are the best time to visit Tenerife. This is when the probability of rain drops to zero per cent, sometimes for weeks on end. In fact, July is actually recorded as having 0 days of rain in the south. Statistically speaking, the months either side of this have one day of rain. In the north, August takes the top spot with an average of four days of rain.

From January to March, however, there can be frequent thunderstorms. Even December is one of the more changeable months. From April onwards, the weather usually becomes drier.

Climate change has been becoming increasingly noticeable on Tenerife for several years now. For some time now, thunderstorms bringing heavy rain during the winter months have been growing in intensity, whilst the summer months are becoming increasingly dry. Even the north of Tenerife, which has always been green, is now affected by dry spells, during which even cactus fields can wither.

Weather: What are the warmest months on Tenerife?

Statistically speaking, August is the warmest month in both the north and south of Tenerife. During this month, the temperature rises to an average of 21 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively. The average monthly maximum temperature is 26 degrees in the north and 29 degrees in the south, whilst the average minimum temperatures are 17 and 21 degrees.
