Weather in Costa Adeje: the sunny side of Tenerife

Costa Adeje is situated on the south-west coast of Tenerife. The resort is renowned for its guaranteed sunshine. The «lee side of Mount Teide» is responsible for this unique climate. This is because the north-easterly trade winds push moist air towards the island’s northern flank, where it rises over Puerto Cruz and the clouds release their rain. The air that reaches the southern side is dry and warm. For this reason, the sun shines around Costa Adeje, whilst it may be overcast further north.

For holidaymakers, this means two things: the south is the more reliable choice when it comes to hours of sunshine. And there is no single weather forecast for the whole of Tenerife. Anyone planning a day trip should keep an eye on the forecast for their destination, as conditions there can be quite different.

The weather station for the south of Tenerife is situated at Tenerife South Airport. It is therefore about 18 kilometres from Costa Adeje, but lies at beach level on the same coastline. The station that is significantly closer, however, stands at an altitude of 130 metres and consequently regularly records cooler temperatures than those prevailing on the beach.

The climate in Costa Adeje

The average temperature is 21.5 degrees, and there is a difference of just 6.4 degrees between the coolest month (January, 18.6 degrees) and the warmest month (August, 25 degrees). Seasons as we know them in Central Europe do not exist here.

Rain falls almost exclusively during the winter months, and even then there is relatively little rainfall. The annual total is 117 millimetres. The distribution reflects the dry summer: in July, it is usually 0 millimetres, whereas in December it is 31.7. As a result, the landscape often appears barren, and the swimming pools and beaches are open all year round. Humidity ranges between 61 and 68 per cent throughout the year.
