Water quality and beaches in Santiago del Teide today

There are two official bathing zones in Santiago del Teide. The rating is based on our own calculation: it takes in the health authority laboratory readings with the waste water discharges nearby and the conditions of recent days. It is not an official verdict.

Weather in Los Gigantes, Tenerife

Los Gigantes is situated on the west coast of Tenerife. The town is hugely popular with tourists. A reliable weather forecast is therefore particularly important. The cliffs, which gave the town its name, rise vertically 500 metres from the sea. These geographical features also influence the weather: the town is often sheltered from the wind, and the trade winds barely reach it due to the Teno massif lying behind it.

The cliffs block out the sun several weeks earlier than is the case on the open coast. This makes Los Gigantes a less windy – and therefore often warmer – place. Whilst Los Gigantes is already sinking into partial shade, the sun is still relatively high above the sea. Anyone wishing to watch the sunset should therefore plan to visit Playa de la Arena in the neighbouring village instead.

A day in Los Gigantes: what matters

Los Gigantes, together with Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena, forms a continuous strip of settlements along the west coast of Tenerife. The three places therefore share the same weather – and consequently their beaches too: in Los Gigantes, Playa de Guíos lies right next to the cliff face. Playa de la Arena in the neighbouring village is the wider and better-developed beach.

There are two things that have a greater impact on a day at the beach than the temperature alone. The black lava sand absorbs the sun’s heat and becomes significantly warmer than lighter-coloured sand on hot days. And the shadow cast by the sheer cliff face, which often begins to fall as early as the afternoon.

The nearby harbour of Los Gigantes is the starting point for boat trips along the cliffs to the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera. However, when the seas are rough, trips are sometimes cancelled – even when the sun has long since come out again.

Swimming conditions in Los Gigantes

The municipality of Santiago del Teide has two official bathing areas: Playa de la Arena, with its black sand – for which the forecast above also applies – and Playa de Guíos, situated directly beneath the cliffs. The relevant section above shows the current water quality.
