Weather in Los Cristianos: dry and sheltered from the wind
Los Cristianos is situated on the southern tip of Tenerife. Mount Teide provides shelter from the wind, as the north-easterly trade winds lose their moisture on the island’s northern flank. The climate in the south is dry and warm. This is further enhanced by the town’s location in a bay that opens to the south. The small Montaña Chayofita ensures that the wind, which attracts surfers further east at El Médano, reaches this area only in a muted form.
Los Cristianos is therefore one of the places on Tenerife where the claim of ‚guaranteed sunshine‘ is most likely to be true. This also shows that the idea of a single climate for Tenerife is a myth: the largest of the Canary Islands has numerous climate zones.
The weather station featured on this page is located at Tenerife South Airport, some 15 kilometres away. However, it is also situated at beach level on the same coastline. The nearest station, in the hinterland of Adeje, lies 130 metres above sea level. As a result, it regularly reports cooler temperatures than those experienced on the beach.
The climate in Los Cristianos
The annual average is 21.5 degrees, and the fluctuations are comparatively small at 6.4 degrees. January is considered the coolest month at 18.6 degrees, whilst August is the warmest at 25 degrees. Rain falls almost exclusively during the winter months.
Over the 365 days of the year, the total rainfall is 117 millimetres. July remains dry, whilst December sees 31.7 millimetres. This is also the reason why the landscape often looks parched and why the tourism industry advertises ‚guaranteed sunshine‘. Humidity ranges between 61 and 68 per cent.
