Weather in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: warm and sheltered from the wind
Santa Cruz is situated on the east coast of Tenerife. Located right at the foot of the Anaga Mountains, the city is sheltered from the trade winds: the moist air gets trapped in the Anaga Mountains, whilst Santa Cruz lies just behind them, in the lee. As a result, Tenerife’s capital is one of the warmest and driest places on the island, even though it is situated in the north.
Anyone travelling from Santa Cruz to La Laguna will often notice the difference after just a few kilometres. This is because further up, at an altitude of 550 metres, it is usually several degrees cooler and often overcast, whilst down in the town the sun is shining.

Beach weather in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
One of the most popular beaches on the whole island is in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Playa de las Teresitas in San Andrés is also the town’s beach. Its light-coloured sand does not come from the island, but was imported from the Sahara. The section above shows the current state of water quality.
Playa de las Teresitas is not actually in the town itself, but in the fishing village of San Andrés, a few kilometres to the north-east. An offshore breakwater breaks the swell there, so the water is usually calm. It’s a completely different story on the open coast at Las Gaviotas. The Anaga Mountains rise up right behind the beach. The weather changes there after just a few kilometres.
