Weather in Playa de las Américas: the driest part of Tenerife
Playa de las Américas is situated on the south-west coast of Tenerife. The region shares a continuous stretch of coastline with Costa Adeje. The weather in the south of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is considered to be extremely stable. The trade winds release their moisture on the northern flank, whilst the south generally remains dry and sunny.
The difference compared with the north of the mainland is the most striking feature any of the Canary Islands has to offer. Anyone travelling from Playa de las Américas to Puerto de la Cruz, for example, will find themselves passing through or entering a different weather system.
Our weather forecast is based on data from the Las Américas forecasting station itself – in other words, taken directly from the beach.
The climate in Playa de las Américas
Playa de las Américas has an annual average temperature of 21.5 degrees. The variations over the twelve months are relatively small: January is considered the coolest month (18.6 degrees), whilst August is the warmest (25 degrees). As is the case in many coastal locations across the Canary Islands, the difference is therefore just 6.4 degrees.
Rain in Playa de las Américas also falls almost exclusively during the winter months. In total, this tourist hotspot records 117 millimetres of rainfall. July remains dry, whilst December sees 31.7 millimetres of rain. Humidity averages between 61 and 68 per cent throughout the year.

Swimming at Playa de las Américas
The beach areas of Playa de las Américas are part of the municipality of Adeje. There are a total of nine bathing areas there: Playa de Troya I and II, Playa del Bobo, Playa de la Pinta and others. The section above shows the current water quality in each of these areas.
The coastal strip extends eastwards into Los Cristianos and westwards into Costa Adeje. There are no clear boundaries. A continuous beach promenade links the three tourist resorts. This is particularly handy when the wind is strong: if conditions are unpleasant on one beach, there is usually another beach nearby. Due to variations in the layout, it can be sheltered from the wind just a few hundred metres away.
