More about sea temperatures on Tenerife

The Canary Islands lie around 300 kilometres from the African mainland, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean around the islands is several thousand metres deep. Consequently, the sea temperature around the Canary Islands is cool and consistent. The sea off the Canary Islands barely warms up in summer, but conversely does not cool down significantly in winter either.

Average sea temperatures range between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius all year round. Incidentally, this is precisely why so many whales and dolphins make their home around Tenerife and the neighbouring islands. Full details on whale watching in Tenerife can be found via the link above.

But back to the sea temperature on Tenerife: clearly, bath-like temperatures are a different matter altogether. Nevertheless, the Canary Islands are well suited for swimming all year round. At least as far as the sea temperature on Tenerife and the other islands is concerned. When it comes to rough seas, however, the Canary Islands can be dangerous, particularly in winter.

In recent years, the sea temperature on Tenerife and off the other Canary Islands has been rising more and more rapidly. The previous average figures are now rarely applicable. This is because the sea is warming up so quickly that it is leading to algal blooms and changes in the behaviour of marine life.

What is the sea temperature like on Tenerife?

When going for a swim, that first moment in particular can often come as a bit of a shock. Air temperatures in the Canary Islands are usually relatively high. This means that even a sea temperature in Tenerife that's actually quite pleasant can suddenly feel chilly. After a short while, however, it's really lovely to swim peacefully in the sea.
