Anyone who reads our news should be able to find out how it is produced. That is why we disclose which sources we use, who is responsible for our articles, and how we deal with advertising, artificial intelligence and errors.
Teneriffa News was founded in 2011 by Johannes Bornewasser. Born in Düsseldorf, he is a trained editor and is now the publisher and editor-in-chief of Teneriffa News. Our small editorial team works with freelancers, photographers and guest writers from various islands. We report on all eight Canary Islands in German, English and Spanish.
Teneriffa News reports independently
We work independently, impartially and critically. Our editorial content is produced without external influence from third parties. As a matter of principle, we do not accept funding from political parties, government bodies or interest groups.
Teneriffa News is funded exclusively through advertising and membership fees from our readers. Membership payments via a paywall have been available since November 2020. In return, members enjoy benefits such as fewer adverts and access to the comments section. In terms of advertising, we market our reach independently of the content of our reporting. Therefore, editorial content is never produced on behalf of advertisers. Furthermore, as a matter of principle, we do not publish any paid opinion pieces.
Our guiding principle is the Press Code
Teneriffa News adheres to the Press Code of the German Press Council. The Press Code covers, amongst other things, truthfulness, journalistic diligence, the separation of advertising and editorial content, and the protection of personal rights. The transparent correction of errors is also part of this.
We have adopted these principles as the benchmark for producing our reports. This commitment to rigour applies both to fact-checking and to the way we treat the people we report on. We clearly label comments and opinion pieces so that you can recognise them straight away. Newsletters may reflect personal views, but articles do not, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Sources and Research
We prefer to work with primary sources. We verify every fact against the original source. Our sources include the Government of the Canary Islands, the island councils and local authorities, the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), the AEMET (the meteorological service), the emergency services and the 112 emergency call centre, the police and the courts.
We also draw on our own research and discussions with local residents, experts, public authorities and those affected. Our work is not limited to simply reporting official statements. Research is a fundamental part of our work.
Agency material and author attributions
We use material from the Spanish news agency EFE, which is clearly attributed. News items for which our editorial team shares responsibility are published without naming the authors, under the name «Teneriffa News». In such cases, this name signifies shared editorial responsibility.
AI with human oversight
Our approach to artificial intelligence is explained in our AI guidelines.
Images with source attribution
We do not use AI-generated images. We credit the photographers and agencies directly on the image. We create our graphics using graphics software, not AI image generation.
We correct errors transparently
We do make mistakes. To ensure you can transparently track what we have changed, we correct significant errors in a traceable manner. This includes incorrect information, figures or names. A correction notice is added at the end of the relevant article. In this, we state what was incorrect and when and how we corrected it. We correct simple typos or formatting errors without making a separate note of them. We make a clear distinction between a correction to the content and a purely linguistic or formal correction.
Advertising is clearly labelled
We clearly label advertising and partnerships using ‚advert‘ notices. We want you to be able to tell whether content is editorial or advertising. There is a clear distinction between advertising and editorial content, and advertisers generally have no influence over the latter.
