Weather in El Médano: Plenty of wind for surfers

El Médano is situated on the south-east coast of Tenerife. The island’s windsurfing area lies close to Montaña Roja. There’s a geographical reason for this: the north-easterly trade winds are channelled by the island’s mountains on either side and hit the coast at El Médano with almost no obstruction. That’s why the town is the top destination for windsurfers and kitesurfers.

When it comes to planning, this means that the air temperature only partially describes the climate on any given day. The wind causes the perceived temperature to drop more sharply than the figure alone would suggest. Furthermore, for most visitors, the wave conditions shown in the table above are the more important factor.

The climate in El Médano on Tenerife

The annual average is 21.5 degrees. The difference between the coolest month, January, at 18.6 degrees, and the warmest month, August, at 25 degrees, is 6.4 degrees – typical for the region. There are therefore no major seasonal variations.

Rain is also rare at times: the annual total is 117 millimetres. July is usually dry, whilst December sees 31.7 millimetres of rainfall. The landscape looks correspondingly dry. The average humidity is between 61 and 68 per cent.

Swimming weather in El Médano

There are six official bathing areas in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. The forecast above applies to Playa del Médano. Nearby are Playa de El Médano-Leocadio Machado, Playa del Cabezo and Playa de la Tejita at Montaña Roja. You can see the current water quality for today in the relevant section above.

The Montaña Roja towers above the beach. It is a volcanic cone that forms the southern boundary of the bay. Visitors to the island will recognise it from the air, as the airport is situated in the immediate vicinity. Behind it lies Playa de la Tejita, one of Tenerife’s longest unspoilt beaches. The wind data in the table above applies to both sections.
