La Restinga took me by surprise fifteen years ago – and still does to this day. This tiny fishing village on the southern tip of El Hierro lives off the sea, and you can really taste it. The best restaurants in La Restinga aren’t gourmet temples, but four or five simple eateries along the harbour promenade, which serve up every day what the fishermen have landed that morning. If you eat here, you’re eating more authentically than almost anywhere else in the Canary Islands. And more affordably, of course.
Fresh catch of the day straight from the harbour
At lunchtime, La Restinga is at its best – between 2 and 4 pm, divers and locals sit side by side, and the three-course ‚menú del día‘ is available for around twelve euros. Grilled lapas, papas arrugadas, the catch of the day: that’s all you need. If you come in the evening, you’ll pay a little more and find it less busy. You should bring cash with you, as cards aren’t accepted everywhere. A knowledge of Spanish is helpful, as the menus in some restaurants are only available in Castellano.
