Protestant tourism chaplaincy on Fuerteventura closed on 1 June

On Fuerteventura, the situation regarding church services for German-speaking visitors will have changed fundamentally in the summer of 2026. The Tourism Pastoral Office of the Evangelical Church in Germany was disbanded on 1 June 2026. Nevertheless, church services are due to resume from October.

What has changed as of 1 June 2026

The Tourism Pastoral Office had been in existence since 2000, based in Costa Calma. Over the years, the EKD sent retired pastors to the island for periods of eight to ten months at a time to look after holidaymakers and residents. This arrangement came to an end on 1 June 2026.

According to those currently in charge, church services are to continue to be held at the usual venues from October onwards. As of August 2026, it had not yet been definitively clarified who would be responsible for organising these services and to what extent.

The places of worship to date

The services took place on Sundays at three different venues, where the congregation was a guest at each:

Jandía: in the ‚Theatre‘ at the Hotel Faro
Costa Calma: Salón de Actos, Pájara Town Hall, Sundays at 4 pm
Morro Jable: San Miguel Chapel, Sundays at 1 pm

In Morro Jable, the Catholic Church made its small chapel, San Miguel, available for Protestant services. All the services were explicitly ecumenical in nature.

Please note regarding these times: they reflect the situation prior to the closure of the parish office. They have not been confirmed for the season starting in October 2026. Anyone planning their journey based on these times should enquire in advance.

What’s next

For holidaymakers visiting Fuerteventura in autumn or winter, this means: check before you travel. We will update this page as soon as the dates for the season starting in October 2026 have been finalised.

The situation is more stable on the neighbouring islands. On Gran Canaria, the Protestant Tourist Chaplaincy continues its work; a monthly leaflet is published there listing all the events.
