Information on Tenerife

Customs status and costs for parcels sent to the Canaries

The islands belong to Spain but sit outside the EU customs and VAT rules, so separate conditions apply. Delivery usually takes 7 to 10 working days, with cover included up to 500 euros.

Would you like to send a parcel to Tenerife, Gran Canaria or another Canary Island? Then this page will tell you everything you need to know. From delivery times to postage costs, we answer all your questions about sending parcels to Tenerife.

Tenerife is regarded as an EU territory with special status that belongs to Spain. This special status means that, whilst the territory belongs to an EU country, it is not subject to that country’s customs regulations or VAT rules on a one-to-one basis. For this reason, separate conditions generally apply to parcel deliveries to Tenerife and the Canary Islands.

Deutsche Post, or rather its parcel service provider DHL, generally distinguishes between two categories. Firstly, goods can be sent internationally as either a small parcel or a standard parcel, depending on their size and value. Different terms and conditions then apply depending on the contents.

Sending small parcels to the Canary Islands

Items measuring at least 35 x 25 x 3 centimetres are classified as ‚Päckchen‘. However, they must not weigh more than 2 kilograms. Alternatively, ‚Päckchen‘ sent to the Canary Islands may have a maximum combined length of 90 centimetres, for example 60 centimetres long, 20 centimetres wide and 10 centimetres high. For a parcel to Tenerife, the cost when booking online ranges from 11.99 to 18.49 euros, depending on the size.

Sending a parcel to the Canary Islands

Small parcels measure up to 60 x 30 x 15 centimetres. For these, the maximum dimensions are 120 x 60 x 60 centimetres. Prices for parcels vary considerably, depending on size and weight. For example, a parcel weighing up to 5 kilograms costs 29.99 euros when booked online. For parcels weighing up to 10 kilograms, the cost is 37.99 euros. A parcel weighing up to 20 kilograms, on the other hand, costs 52.99 euros. For 30 kilograms, the cost is 67.99 euros.

Parcels are generally insured up to a value of 500 euros, which is why the recipient’s signature is required upon delivery. If insurance covering more than 500 euros is required, this costs an additional 14 euros.

Other courier services also deliver parcels to the Canary Islands. UPS, FedEx and similar companies are often slightly more expensive, but they are usually faster. Depending on the exact parcel, the desired delivery time and the value of the contents, it is therefore worth comparing prices.

Customs duties for parcels to the Canary Islands

Delivery of parcels and small parcels usually takes between 7 and 10 working days. However, experience shows that during peak periods, such as in the run-up to Christmas, it can sometimes take a few days longer. It is therefore advisable to post your parcel in good time.
