First things first: the former landfill site in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, closed in 1983 and, following a lengthy redevelopment phase, reopened in 2014 as a green oasis. The Palmetum is situated in the heart of the city, between the refinery and the auditorium. From a botanical and horticultural perspective, it is a masterpiece.
More than 400 species of palm trees from all over the world are on display, divided into different geographical zones. Three walking routes run through these zones, each taking around an hour to complete. The entire site covers twelve hectares, is exceptionally well maintained and is managed without the use of pesticides or fertilisers. At the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, great importance is attached to sustainability.
The Palmetum is home to a wide variety of endangered plant species and works closely with other botanical gardens around the world. In this way, endangered species are protected and collected on Tenerife.
