Puerto de la Cruz has missed the opening of its new outdoor swimming pool by several months. And the swimming pool near Playa Jardín remains closed to the public. But things are starting to move forward. The town in the north of Tenerife has announced a preview event. The public is also set to be involved.
According to the town hall of the tourist resort in the north of the largest of the Canary Islands, a pre-opening is scheduled for 22 October. Around 100 athletes are set to put the new swimming pool through its paces.
The Tenerife Water Sports Centre (CDAT) is now entering its final phase before it is finally opened to the public. Here is what the Minister for Sport has announced and what visitors can look forward to:
Puerto de la Cruz is set to open its new swimming pool soon
Unlike the Martiánez water park on the promenade, the CDAT focuses on sport. The Minister responsible for sport in Tenerife, Yolanda Moliné, says: „Competitive athletes will begin a phase technically known as a stress test.“
The focus is on the use of the newly built 50- and 25-metre swimming pools. The trial is intended to „check that the entire facility is functioning properly so that any necessary adjustments can be made“.
Moliné adds: „From the very beginning, we have worked closely with both the island’s water sports sector and the local council of Puerto de la Cruz to finalise the commissioning of the sports facilities, which have evolved from a municipal swimming pool into an island-wide water sports centre for the enjoyment of all residents of Tenerife.“
Whilst water sports enthusiasts will be taking a closer look at the new outdoor swimming pool in Puerto de la Cruz on 22 October, the public will be able to take part in a survey from that date on the CDAT website. The aim is to find out what users of the facility would like to see. According to the organisers, this will ensure the service is designed to be visitor-friendly right from the start.

The Minister and the town council have only addressed the significant delay indirectly: Moliné said that „the opening of a sports centre of this kind involves a complex process“ which „includes work and formalities that, whilst not visible, are essential prior to the opening“.
Leopoldo Afonso, the mayor of Puerto, sees the new outdoor swimming pool, complete with stands for around 500 spectators, as „a milestone in the sporting history of Puerto de la Cruz“. Our photo gallery, taken during the construction phase, shows what the new complex looks like:
