Another new arrival for Tenerife’s most popular zoo: Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz is welcoming a new member to the family: Gino the sea lion has made his way from Karlsruhe to the Canary Islands.
The zoo on Tenerife is known, amongst other things, for its animal shows. The sea lions are considered a particular attraction: they juggle balls, jump through hoops, frolic with their keepers and get up to all sorts of mischief.
It all looks like great fun. And that’s exactly what’s about to come to an end at Karlsruhe Zoo. Gino has grown too old for his family. There’s trouble brewing between the young bull and his father, Stevie.
It’s a good thing that the director of Karlsruhe Zoo has close ties with the Canary Islands: Matthias Reinschmidt was himself the director of Loro Parque for 15 years. And so, for the animal expert – who has appeared in more than 400 TV documentaries filmed in Tenerife – arranging for Gino to go to Tenerife was a matter close to his heart in more ways than one.
Loro Parque: Sea lion Gino arrives in the Canary Islands this weekend
The keepers had already packed the crates for the journey by the middle of this week. And so sea lion Gino was finally loaded onto the transport on Thursday. On Friday, he will fly via Frankfurt to Tenerife, where he is due to settle in at his own pace over the weekend.
It remains to be seen when Gino will also be appearing as part of the sea lion show. First, he needs to be integrated into the existing sea lion group at Loro Parque on Tenerife.
Loro Parque is home to the world’s largest collection of parrots. It is also regarded as a remarkable zoo. On the other hand, the keeping of orcas in particular is viewed very critically.
