Once again, a man on Tenerife has attempted to escape the police by jumping into the sea. And once again, it was the police, of all people, who had to save his life. The 53-year-old Senegalese man was working as a drug dealer in the south of the Canary Islands when the police became aware of him.

The dealer saw officers approaching his location near Playa de Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. In a panic, he first threw his rucksack into the sea and jumped in after it a short while later.

As the man couldn’t swim, the officers took particular notice of him. The police rescued the man and were quite astonished when they looked inside his rucksack:

Tenerife police rescue drug dealer from the sea – prison

The joint operation by local and national police was specifically targeted at street vendors who were selling all manner of goods – from counterfeit bags and football shirts to drugs – along the promenade of the tourist resort.

Street trading has recently increased significantly, particularly in the south of Tenerife. The police have therefore announced targeted operations in Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and at various other popular beaches in the southern region of Tenerife. Around 4,000 counterfeit items have already been seized during the initial operations.

The man had already caught the officers‘ attention shortly before he jumped, as he had reacted with extreme nervousness to the approaching police officers. Nevertheless, the initial focus was on rescuing the man. To this end, several officers ran to the nearby marina and obtained a boat, which they used to rush to the aid of the man, who could not swim.

Investigators found 16 packets of cannabis and 14 doses of cocaine in the 53-year-old’s rucksack. The man was arrested for offences under the Narcotics Act.

In a similar incident in the north of Tenerife, the police also had to rescue a fugitive from the floodwaters. Read the full story below:
