Puerto de la Cruz adds 240 parking spaces on waste ground

Some 6,000 square metres of rubbish-strewn land next to the main esplanade have been cleared, levelled and drained. The town hall has budgeted 40,000 euros, with the spaces due to open by the end of April.

It is the most glaring eyesore in the whole region: but now, a derelict site next to the large car park at Puerto de la Cruz has been redeveloped. Where rubbish and rubble used to be piled up, new parking spaces are now being created.

This means the vast site will gain 240 parking spaces. The new area had previously been unused. Due to the growing demand for parking spaces, Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall commissioned a specialist firm to carry out the conversion.

Across an area of around 6,000 square metres, a great deal of rubbish first had to be cleared away. The next step was to level the site and install a drainage system. In the process, the workers discovered numerous uninvited guests.

The site was riddled with pests. The town hall stated that the expansion of the area had therefore, as a side effect, provided for the urgently needed clean-up of the site.

The final stage now involves work on the ground surface, so that cars and delivery vans can be parked there in future. The town hall has allocated a budget of 40,000 euros for this. The Esplanade will therefore provide around 1,600 parking spaces in future.

Tenerife: How Puerto de la Cruz got its car park

Mayor Leopoldo Afonso and Felipe Rodríguez, the councillor responsible for this area, amongst other things, met on Monday to inspect the work on site. The politicians expressed their satisfaction with the progress of the construction work.

„The new car parks are vital for improving our residents‘ quality of life. This measure is just the start of further projects we have planned,“ said Afonso. The new car parks are due to be completed by the end of April.

Originally, a large promenade park was planned for this site. However, the land reclamation work was so extensive that the city ran out of money by the time the first phase of construction was completed. Consequently, the area was promptly rezoned as a large car park and has remained so for several decades now.
