The traffic situation on Lanzarote has been on my mind for a long time. I hadn’t realised until today that petrol prices in the Canary Islands are subsidised and that petrol is cheaper there than elsewhere not just because of natural tax advantages. Thanks to Teneriffa News, I now know more about it and am wondering why this is the case.
Looking at the traffic on the islands, I get the impression that more than half the vehicles in the Canary Islands are hire cars. And for those driving them, the fuel prices certainly aren’t a major consideration.
Wouldn’t there be other ways of making it easier for locals to get about without also providing financial incentives for tourists to ‚cruise around‘ the Canary Islands?
That would be a wonderful tool as part of efforts to promote sustainable tourism.
