Gran Canaria has received a wonderful accolade: the Canary Islands are home to two of Europe’s ten most beautiful beaches. At least, that’s according to users of an online comparison website, who have ranked two beaches on Gran Canaria in the EU’s top 10.
The Canary Islands are synonymous with beautiful beaches and plenty of sunshine. Holidaymakers on the Canary Islands favour a wide variety of beaches for sunbathing. Some love the black volcanic sand beaches, whilst others prefer the golden expanses.
The Canary Islands offer both. There are also man-made beaches and unspoilt natural beaches, where you’ll find stones and rocks but, as a result, usually fewer visitors. But which beaches are actually the most popular in the Canary Islands?
These are the best beaches on Gran Canaria
According to TripAdvisor, an online comparison site covering a wide range of holiday-related topics, Las Canteras beach in the capital, Las Palmas, is particularly beautiful. The beach is around three kilometres long and is known for its golden sand and abundance of sunny days.
Las Canteras ranks fifth in the list of Europe’s ten best beaches for 2024. Among other things, it is praised for its family-friendly atmosphere and the space it offers to sunbathers, families and even surfers alike. It also boasts a large promenade with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants.
Furthermore, Playa de Maspalomas has made it to ninth place in the EU rankings. The beach, in the south of the Canary Islands, is situated amongst the town’s famous dunes. Nestled within a popular area of Gran Canaria, Playa de Maspalomas is considered spacious enough to relax. This beach, too, is around three kilometres long.
Not just the Canary Islands: what are the best beaches in Europe?
The beach that topped the ranking is Praia da Falesia in Portugal. Crystal-clear water, red cliffs and golden sand particularly impressed many visitors. In second place in the comparison website’s ranking is Isola dei Conigli in Italy, which belongs to Lampedusa. It lies between Sicily and the coast of Tunisia.
Third place went to Playa La Concha in San Sebastián. It is the only beach in the top 10 belonging to Spain that is not in the Canary Islands. Iceland, Greece and Cyprus are also represented in the top ten.
