Canary Islands fund LGBTIQ+ projects and nursery places

Both decisions appeared in the BOC on Monday. The nursery money is awarded directly, without a competitive call, to municipal and private centres taking children before compulsory schooling begins.

The Canary Islands Government is supporting projects run by the LGBTIQ+ community. Following previous discussions on the matter, the regional authorities have now taken concrete action. The decision was published on Monday in the Canary Islands‘ Official Gazette, the BOC. The regional government is thus officially funding projects promoting diversity.

With the publication in the Official Gazette, the government has finalised the award of grants, having previously put them out to public tender. The funding decision is part of a series of measures taken by the regional government to promote equality. Most recently, work has been carried out on the implementation of the Equality Act and the Gender Identity Act (more on this here).

A notice in the BOC is the usual method used by the regional government to announce its grants. Shortly before this, other areas eligible for funding had already been announced via the same channel, including an observatory for the historic town centres of the Canary Islands and the training of assistance dogs.

The Canary Islands provide direct support to nursery schools

In addition, the Canary Islands‘ Education Authority has awarded nursery subsidies for early school enrolment without a competitive selection process. The BOC also contained an entry on this subject on Monday. This benefits municipal and private nurseries that admit children before the start of compulsory schooling.

A non-competitive award means that the recipients do not have to compete against one another. In such cases, there is no open call for applications in which the administration is required to compare applications. Instead, the administration itself determines the group of beneficiaries. This direct award is justified by the public interest in the purpose for which the funding is provided.

Early school enrolment in the Canary Islands relates to children of pre-primary age, for whom there are fewer state-funded places on the islands. According to the education authority, the funding is intended to create and secure places in local authority and private institutions.
