In pictures: Düsseldorf carnival delegation tours Puerto de la Cruz

The visitors arrived in time for the Burial of the Sardine and spent a week on the island, taking in the carnival museum in Santa Cruz, receptions at the town hall and the Cabildo, and the closing parade.

The Düsseldorf delegation's visit to the island's president in Tenerife's capital, Santa Cruz, was one of the absolute highlights of the entire trip. Düsseldorf's Carnival Prince Martin I thanks the hosts. Our photographer accompanied the group throughout the week. Below you can see pictures of the Rhineland delegation basking in the sunshine... Is it all over by Ash Wednesday? Far from it! On Tenerife, that's when things really get going. Just in time for the burial of the sardine, the group from Düsseldorf arrived on the sunny island. (You can find all the background to this quirky tradition here, by the way.) Photo: Juppi M.

The next morning, the first port of call was Loro Parque. Among those present were Carnival Prince Martin I and Venetia Sabine, as well as various representatives of the Rhineland Carnival. On the far left of the picture: representatives of the KG Regenbogen. Also present were many musicians and officials. Photo: Juppi M.

Tenerife Carnival, Puerto de la Cruz, Düsseldorf Delegation, Köpi
Before the next official appointment, we needed a quick bite to eat. So off we went to the well-known "KöPi" on Avenida Betancourt y Molina. Photo: Juppi M.

And, in true style of the Canary Islands, it is not just the heads of state who are welcomed, of course. Hospitality dictates that the entire delegations be invited. The town hall is rarely this full. Photo: Juppi M.

Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor, Thomas Geisel (centre), also attended the official reception hosted by the Island President. The Lord Mayor did not miss the opportunity to say a few words to the city's carnival twin town. Photo: Juppi M.

And, of course, a banquet is a must afterwards. Sharing a meal is simply part of the culture. Photo: Juppi M.

Before his departure the following day, the Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf offered a few more words of thanks. It was he who, together with the Mayor of Puerto, had extended the twinning agreement between the two cities. Photo: Juppi M.

And then the time had finally come: Düsseldorf's carnival revellers are getting ready for the big parade. Photo: Juppi M.

The floats are traditionally less ostentatious than those in the Rhineland. At the carnival on Tenerife, the focus is on the participants. Prince Martin I and Venetia Sabine are clearly enjoying themselves. Photo: Juppi M.
