Under the watchful eye of Mayor Leopoldo Afonso, the latest refurbishment at Lago Martiánez was celebrated in Puerto de la Cruz. The famous swimming pool in the north of Tenerife now has 4,400 sun loungers.
700 new sun loungers are replacing the same number of outdated and, in some cases, broken loungers. In addition, 2,200 new parasols have been purchased. The aim is to make the huge seawater swimming pool more attractive.
Lago Martiánez has undergone continuous refurbishment in recent years. And the operators – which, following partial privatisation, still include the local council – have planned numerous further improvements:
Puerto de la Cruz swimming pool to be refurbished
The swimming pool was originally designed by César Manrique. The Canarian artist and architect is revered in the Canary Islands. Consequently, projects involving his legacy are scrutinised very closely.
This was necessary for the large pool, which had to be completely drained and extensively refurbished several times within the space of just a few years. Work was also carried out on the pump that draws in seawater from far out to sea and pumps it into the pools. For several months now, the majority of the pool complex has been fully operational again. This means work can now begin on other areas.
Lago Martiánez modernised for children
This includes the large pirate ship. For the past 15 years, it has been a source of delight, particularly for younger visitors. The mast was now past its best and had to be replaced. The next step will be to replace the wooden benches around it.
Following repeated reports of problems with sewage off the coast of Puerto de la Cruz, the issue of water quality is also a constant concern. The council has stated that regular analyses show that the intake is located a long way from the problem areas and that the water drawn in meets all the required standards.
This will allow the operators to focus on their next projects. The large ship-shaped bar and several awnings are due to be refurbished by the summer. The octopus by the children’s pool will then be repainted.
Felipe Rodríguez, who is responsible for the swimming pool at the town hall, said: „Our aim is to revitalise Costa Martiánez and restore it to its former glory.“
The town has recently come under criticism for allowing the latest price rise whilst the main beach remains closed and before all this work has been completed. The day ticket for the large swimming pool in Puerto de la Cruz has only recently become more expensive (more on this here). Our photos below show what it looks like at Lago Martiánez:
