Since 2014, the MUSA Festival at the Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología has been dedicated to other countries and cultures. The 2026 edition returns to Mexico, which was previously the focus of attention in 2015. The festival sees itself as a forum for exchange and combines museum work with encounters, reflection and dialogue. This year's programme centres on Mexico's diversity and the historical and human ties between Mexico and the Canary Islands.
The programme includes the special exhibition 'Concomitancias. Legados, presencia y futuros indígenas en México y Canarias', which will be on display at the MUNA from 1 September to 1 November 2026 during normal museum opening hours. The exhibition explores connections, parallels and tensions between the two regions and addresses themes such as colonisation, cultural mixing, the formation of identity and the relationship with the territory.
To kick off the programme, there will be a discussion session entitled 'Candelaria/Chaxiraxi y Guadalupe/Tonantzin' with Larisa Pérez and Gloria Godínez on Wednesday 2 September at 19:00. This will be followed on 3 September at 21:00 by an open-air screening of the film 'La camarista'. Scheduled for Friday 4 September from 21:00 are the performance 'Rojo descolonial' by Gloria Godínez, 'Trama de las dos orillas', traditional Mexican dances with Yacambú, plus a guest appearance by Yuli y su mariachi, and a DJ session featuring Mexican rhythms by DJ Kali.
Other events in September include a workshop on cochineal printing and stamp-making on 5 September, with two time slots to choose from: 11.00-13.00 and 17.00-19.00; the open-air screening of "Museo" on 10 September, a live concert by Bial Hclap on 11 September, and the "Sabores de México" cookery workshop with Armando Saldanha on 12 September. On 16 September, to mark Mexico's National Day, 'Los Sabandeños cantan a México' is on the programme. Also on the programme are the talk 'El tinte que creó un paisaje y la plaga que lo transforma' on 17 September, the films 'Tótem' on 17 September and 'Sujo' on 24 September, live music by Fuensanta on 18 September and by Mencey Romántico performing boleros on 25 September, as well as the piñata workshop 'Sueños de papel' on 19 September. On 23 September, Alejandro de Vera will speak at the conference 'La corriente que nos une: viajes a través del Atlántico. Once años después'.
