The Maritime Rescue Service has escorted a cayuco carrying 41 people, including three women and a child, to the port of La Restinga on the island of El Hierro.
After receiving a report from the Guardia Civil, the Salvamar Navia headed to the area where an echo-sounder reading had been recorded and located the cayuco, which it escorted to the port of El Hierro, where its occupants were attended to by the emergency services.
Sources within this service have told EFE that no hospital transfers have been required.
El Hierro: Migrants recount their five-day crossing
According to the migrants‘ own account, they had undertaken a five-day journey from Batu Kunku (Gambia), and the boat was carrying people from the Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Conakry and Cameroon.
The crew members of this cayuco will be taken to the Temporary Reception Centre for Foreign Nationals (CATE) in the village of San Andrés, in the municipality of Valverde, where they will be looked after by members of the NGO «Corazón naranja, Ebrima Sonko» and will remain in police custody until they are transferred to other facilities off the island.
Second Cayuco brings 74 people to El Hierro
This is the second cayuco to land on El Hierro in the last few hours, as another arrived last night with 74 people on board, including ten women and two children aged two and four.
According to their account, these people had been at sea for six days and had set sail from M'Bour in Senegal.
