Sergio Ramos, the PP’s lead candidate for the Congress of Deputies in the province of Las Palmas, called on all Canarians on Friday to support Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s candidacy in order to «oust» Pedro Sánchez from the Moncloa Palace in light of the «national emergency» Spain is currently facing.
Speaking to journalists after submitting his candidacy to the Las Palmas Electoral Commission, alongside those of the other candidates standing for the Congress and the Senate on the islands in this province, Ramos also called on parties that «do not operate at national level» to back the PP and to state who they intend to support, Feijóo or Sánchez: «There are only those two options.»
Ramos has said that they are delighted that the pre-campaign for the 29 November elections is getting underway, «the most important elections in our democracy since Adolfo Suárez, because the choice will be between two people and two completely different models».
PP election campaign: Feijóo announces pledges for the Canary Islands
He has argued that his party’s candidate, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, «is the best-qualified to lead Spain and the one most committed to the Canary Islands» and that there will soon be news of his commitments to the islands.
Ramos has stated that when the PP held an absolute majority, its commitment to the Canary Islands «was total», and he has therefore reiterated his call to «all Canarians to ensure that the next president is from the PP».
In Ramos’s view, «we are facing a national emergency with many facets».
He emphasised that «all of Spain’s institutions have been violated» and that, for this reason, the PP’s aim is «to oust Pedro Sánchez from La Moncloa».
As an example of the situation in Spain, he referred to the housing crisis and pointed out that when the PP left government in 2018, the average rent for an 80-square-metre flat in the capital of Gran Canaria was 763 euros, and eight years later, under ‚Sanchismo‘ and the PSOE, it stands at over 1,200 euros.
He insisted that the models represented by the PP and the PSOE are «clearly distinct» and that his party’s model «ensures the well-being of all Spaniards and Canarians».
Canary Islands: PP aims to win eight seats in the Congress
As for the PP’s aspirations in the Canary Islands ahead of 29 November, Ramos emphasised that «they are aiming to secure eight seats, which is the number of candidates standing, and to win the election by an absolute majority», adding that they are aware many people are backing other parties, such as Vox. He therefore urged them to choose «those who have defended the Canary Islands in the Spanish Parliament and the well-known candidates who are fighting for the islands and whose Canarian voice is heard».
«We are not a party that was formed a quarter of an hour ago; we have a 40-year newspaper archive, and the people of the Canary Islands know the PP and its candidate well,» he emphasised.
He emphasised that the PP has won more than four absolute majorities and that Feijóo is the only candidate with experience of government, having served as president of an autonomous community, Galicia, and, furthermore, «has made commitments and signed a contract for Spain».
He also highlighted the good relationship of the president of the PP on the islands and vice-president of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Domínguez, «a close bond that will go a long way towards securing victory».
Gran Canaria: Sánchez is considering a possible move to the Island Council
The PP’s candidate for the Senate in Gran Canaria, Carlos Sánchez, has stated that he expects to be elected on 29 November, although he has made it clear that he will resign from the Senate if he is elected president of the Gran Canaria Island Council in the local and regional elections to be held in May.
Sánchez has expressed optimism and stated that they hope to be able to «remove the government led by Pedro Sánchez from Moncloa, as it has been disastrous for Spain» due to the migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands, «rampant inflation» and the institutional crisis the country is facing, and he therefore considered it «urgent that the PP takes over the Presidency and, once and for all, there is a decent government in our country».
Las Palmas: The PP unveils its lists of candidates for both chambers
María Teresa Ortega, until now Director-General of the Canary Islands Employment Service, is listed as number two on the list of candidates for the Congress of Deputies representing Las Palmas; she is followed by Guillermo Mariscal, who is standing for re-election to the Lower House, and Clara Peña, a councillor from Puerto del Rosario.
Esther Hernández is standing for the Senate for the island of Fuerteventura, and José Francisco Hernández for Lanzarote.
