There’s a meow from the bottom left. A pair of large eyes stare up hypnotically. Their gazes meet, and a moment later a small piece of banana tortilla falls to the floor. It doesn’t reach the floor, though. Because Edu’s cat is quicker. The food is so fresh that it tastes just as good to humans as it does to animals.
El Rincón de Edu restaurant in Tenerife

If you pop into El Rincón de Edu in Tenerife, almost everything is served with banana. And that’s hardly surprising, as this little eatery is situated right in the middle of a banana plantation typical of Tenerife.
Our tips for El Rincón de Edu
The tortilla is an absolute must-try here. Whilst you can find it almost everywhere in the Canary Islands, it’s rarely made with banana as well as potatoes and eggs. That’s a mistake. Because once you’ve tried this version, you won’t want anything else. The banana doesn’t impart much flavour of its own, but it makes the dish feel much fresher.
How to get to El Rincón de Edu in Tenerife
You’ll find all this in San Juan de la Rambla, near Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the Canary Islands. From the TF-5, the road leads a short way downhill. There, on Calle El Rosario, the entrance is somewhat tucked away on a bend. A few metres further downhill there is a car park, but buses also serve at least the main road.
Young wine at El Rincón de Edu
And it’s well worth making the journey by public transport, because although Edu serves young, simple wine, it tastes very good. It’s poured from a cooling system connected to a steel cask, right in the garden of the premises:

But anyone who comes here is mainly interested in the food. There’s a wide range of starters on offer, such as the banana tortilla (see the top picture). And that’s best shared, if anything. Because the portion is definitely too substantial for a starter. The tomatoes with tuna are a much better choice as a light appetiser:

Of course, Edu also serves typical Canary Islands dishes, such as chicken with Papas arrugadas, grilled cheese with mojos, various croquettes – with tuna, spinach, chicken or banana – as well as fresh fish and meat dishes. If you want to try everything on the menu, you’ll have to come back. The portions are generous, so even a menu that seems small at first glance is too extensive to try all the delicacies on your first few visits.
Fortunately, though, help is at hand. Because if there are any leftovers, the cats will take care of them. As soon as a guest leaves their seat, the table is quickly cleared. What would attract the attention of the regulatory authorities in Central Europe makes for a truly cute sight here. And let’s be honest: it would be a real shame to throw this food in the bin:

Visitors should leave a bit of room anyway. The desserts are also highly recommended. Once again, the cuisine tends to be a little simpler, yet extremely tasty. Examples include Gofio mousse, timba, chocolate cake or banana mousse with gofio, as shown here:
