Almond blossom and wild flowers around Santa Lucía de Tirajana

From January onwards the hills around the Gran Canaria mountain village fill with colour, from almond trees and bougainvillea to cactus flowers in April. A photo tour along the walking routes to El Valle and El Parralillo.

Ferula communis (giant fennel) shines in a vibrant yellow by the side of the path leading to the Mirador de las Tederas. (It could also be Thapsia villosa, the hairy thapsia.)

The first wildflowers start to appear as early as January. After a refreshing shower, with a bit of luck you might even spot a rainbow.

In the mountains of Gran Canaria, the almond trees begin to blossom as early as the end of January. You can spot this beautiful almond tree whilst taking a walk from the village of Santa Lucía de Tirajana to El Valle.

You can also admire viper's bugloss (Echium virescens DC.) whilst out for a walk in the local area.

In a meadow near El Parralillo, a district of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the crown-leaved glebion (Glebionis coronaria) thrives magnificently.

You can admire magnificent roses and orange trees on the way from the village centre to El Parralillo - even as early as February!

On the way from the village centre to El Parralillo, the most beautiful wildflowers bloom amongst the cacti and an old eucalyptus tree, such as the wood sorrel (Oxalis pes-caprae L.) shown in this photo.

At the entrance to Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the Bauhinia purpurea L. (the orchid tree) shines in beautiful shades of purple - often as early as February.

In mid-February, the almond trees (Prunus amygdalus) are in full bloom in Santa Lucía de Tirajana. The church of Santa Lucía can be seen in the background.

Until the beginning of March, you can still enjoy the almond blossom in Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
