La Laguna

La Laguna Cathedral opens its bell tower to visitors

Tickets are sold through the cathedral's official website and cost 7 euros, with an audio guide in five languages included. Residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife province and holders of a disability card go free.

The cathedral of La Laguna attracts thousands of visitors with its imposing neoclassical façade. The cathedral on Tenerife is situated in the historic centre of the city, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. As early as the 16th century, the Parroquia de los Remedios church was built on this site, which was later elevated to the status of a cathedral.

It was not until 1819 that the building was granted this status. At the beginning of the 20th century, extensive reconstruction work took place, giving the cathedral its present appearance. The Neoclassical façade is the only element of the original architecture to have been preserved, whilst the interior is characterised by a distinctive Neo-Gothic style. Particularly striking are the ribbed vaults and the spacious ambulatory.

Among the most significant artistic treasures are the Baroque altarpiece of the Virgen de los Remedios, a monumental pulpit made of Italian marble, and the artistic and liturgical collection in the treasury. Since 1983, the cathedral has been under special protection as a cultural heritage site. Visitors can now also visit the bell tower. Here are the opening times and prices:
