The Cologne-based ensemble is appearing at the VI Festival Contemporáneo in Gran Canaria with its programme 'PuLsar'. It combines saxophone, percussion and piano to create a chamber-music soundscape that draws on breath, attack, resonance and the timbres of the piano. Trío Abstrakt describes its work as focusing on contemporary music from the past three decades and, to this end, collaborates closely with contemporary composers.
The concert programme features 'Songlines' by Isabel Mundry, lasting 16 minutes; the world premiere of 'Ibidem' by the composer from the Canary Islands, Alicia González de la Fe, lasting ten minutes; and 'PuLsar' by Giorgio Netti, lasting 25 minutes. The eponymous work forms the second half of the concert and is inspired by neutron stars. The performers are Salim Javaid on saxophone, Alexandre Ferreira Silva on percussion and Marlise Debacker on piano.
As well as classical concert formats, the trio also develops its own formats and stylistically draws on influences from improvisation, electronic music, classical music and jazz. Composers who have written for the ensemble include Isabel Mundry, Franck Bedrossian, Alberto Posadas, Milica Djordjević and Giorgio Netti. Admission costs five euros. A 20 per cent discount is available for the unemployed, young people aged 12 to 25, students, people over 65, large families and people with a disability rating of 33 per cent or higher. A special-rate ticket for three euros is available for pupils attending theatre, dance, circus and music schools.
To accompany the concert, the festival is organising a talk as part of the '#endiálogo' series on the relationship between music and astronomy, featuring researchers José Luis Besada from the UCM and Alicia López from the IAC. This talk will take place on 25 September at the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos in Tenerife, with free admission.
