Los Gavilanes: Zarzuela at the Teatro Pérez Galdós
«Los Gavilanes» is a zarzuela in three acts with music by Jacinto Guerrero and a libretto by José Ramos Martín. A zarzuela is a Spanish form of musical theatre featuring singing and acted scenes. The story centres on the return of the wealthy Juan to his village and a conflict involving Rosaura and Gustavo. The work premiered in Madrid in 1923 and forms part of the Canary Islands' 34th zarzuela season. The setting is a rural village: Juan returns after years in America, wealthy but lonely, and falls in love with the much younger Rosaura, who is already betrothed to Gustavo. Adriana's influence over her daughter exacerbates the conflict, as she sees in Juan the prospect of a secure future.
The title alludes to older, wealthy men who court young women, thereby highlighting the play's social commentary. Among the well-known musical numbers is the romance 'Mi aldea'.
The performance at the Teatro Pérez Galdós is under the musical direction of Rafael Sánchez Araña, with Jorge Torres directing. The cast includes Borja Quiza, Ruth Terán, Joan Laínez, Alberto Aliaga, Isaac Dos Santos, Silvia Zorita, Alicia Ramos, Andrea Zoghbi and José Luis Massó. The Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and its choir are also taking part.
There will be two performances on Friday 23 October 2026 and Saturday 24 October 2026, both at 20:00 in the main auditorium of the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. For the performance on 24 October, doors will open 45 minutes beforehand.
