The piece emerges from and unfolds through a body that is still dancing, yet already feels more alien, heavier and less agile. Raquel Ponce Hernández is responsible for the concept and direction, and develops and performs "Señora tu madre" together with her son, Martín Viera Ponce.
In the semi-darkness of the stage, a torch becomes the central element of the production. Held in the son's hand, it illuminates the mother and raises the question of the direction of care anew. The torch determines what becomes visible and what remains hidden, whilst simultaneously symbolising gaze, guidance, judgement and tenderness.
This movement-based piece explores the fear of ageing, the vulnerability of motherhood as strength wanes, and the reversal of familiar roles between mother and son. For the artist, dancing her own age is a way of resisting it whilst, at the same time, embracing it.
"Señora tu madre" is being performed as part of Residencias SIT at the Sala Insular de Teatro in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The performance lasts approximately one hour and is recommended for children aged seven and over. The graphics and video are by Gregorio Viera.
