In future, shops throughout the municipality of Guía de Isora will be able to set their own opening hours. The scheme applies all year round, provided that the criteria for a high-traffic tourist area are met.

The Deputy Ministry for Industry, Trade and Consumer Protection is extending the exemption at the request of the municipal council of Guía de Isora. It will come into force one day after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, i.e. from tomorrow.

These new opening hours have been in force for Playa San Juan, Alcalá and Varadero since 2015. The local council’s application for the extension dates from 1 June and also refers to tourist facilities in the island’s interior and at medium altitudes. Guía de Isora has eight hotels, 907 holiday accommodation units, 7,327 beds and 299 catering establishments. The regulation can be viewed here. Further decisions concern an emergency power supply system on Gran Canaria, avocado regulations and nursery subsidies in San Miguel:

Gran Canaria: Environmental conditions for emergency power plant in El Goro

The environmental authority has also imposed conditions on a planned 20-megawatt emergency power plant in the El Goro industrial estate on Gran Canaria. GPM Generación must therefore, with immediate effect, monitor air pollutants and noise levels, and protect local residents, soil, water and wildlife through protective measures.

Before construction work begins, the company must survey the site for wildlife and, where necessary, relocate any reptiles, as well as arrange for archaeological supervision of the works. GPM Generación is to monitor air quality during the planned three-year operational period, in conjunction with the La Garita-El Goro plant. Before any extension is granted, the company must submit a final report. The requirements can be found here.

New rules for Aguacate de Canarias

New regulations regarding varieties, fruit weight, ripeness, planting distances, harvesting and post-harvest treatment now apply in Spain to the Protected Geographical Indication «Aguacate de Canarias». The Canary Islands Institute for Agricultural and Food Quality has also added the Antillean variety to the list of protected varieties.

The TROPICÁN producers‘ association, acting as the administrative body for the protected designation, submitted the amendment on 15 September. Its members unanimously approved the new text. The Institute has made the revised conditions and the standardised document available online. The regulation has been in force in Spain since its publication. The Official Journal documents it here.

Bono infantil: San Miguel takes over the Canary Islands‘ nursery subsidy

The San Miguel local authority will take over the administration of the «Bono infantil» nursery subsidy for two years. The agreement with the Canary Islands Ministry of Education has been in force since 25 September for municipal nurseries and authorised private early-years care centres.

Families submit their applications directly to the relevant organisation. The organisation reviews the applications within five working days and forwards them electronically to the Canary Islands Government. Upon receipt of the funding, the organisation uses the approved amounts to settle invoices or refund fees already paid within ten calendar days. The agreement can be found here.
