The Canary Islands Government is to receive 30,000,000 euros from the Spanish Ministry of Social Affairs for poverty reduction, social assistance and programmes to combat social exclusion. This funding will be used to finance basic social services. Further decisions relate to housing, grants and schools.
The funding period runs from 1 June to 31 May 2027. Funding is provided for the Canary Islands‘ universal basic income scheme and support for basic needs, as well as services for the homeless, care and social counselling.
The Canary Islands Government applied for the direct grant on 3 August. It must provide evidence of how the funds have been used by 30 August 2027; it may commission third parties to carry out up to 70 per cent of the funded activities. The agreement has been published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands . Three further resolutions regulate social housing in Valleseco, master’s scholarships and assessment grids.
Gran Canaria: 16 social housing flats in Valleseco for the public housing stock
Since 25 September, 16 flats, along with garages and storage rooms, on Calle Antonio Yánez in Valleseco, Gran Canaria, have been added to the Canary Islands Housing Institute’s portfolio. The Gran Canaria Housing Association transferred the complex free of charge. In future, the social housing units are to serve as publicly subsidised accommodation. The resolution can be viewed here.
Back in 2021, the two organisations had agreed to acquire and complete unfinished construction projects. This agreement has been extended; it now runs until 14 July 2029 and increases the stock of social housing. The Institute will handle the registration in the land register and will also bear the associated costs.
The Canary Islands award 15 master’s scholarships to students from Africa
For the 2026/2027 academic year, the Deputy Ministry for External Relations has finally awarded 15 scholarships for Master’s degree programmes at universities in the Canary Islands. Ten scholarship holders will study at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and five at the University of La Laguna. The decision can be read here.
The programme is aimed at students from ten African countries, including Cape Verde, Senegal, Morocco and Ghana. All provisionally selected recipients accepted the scholarships, which were advertised in May, by the deadline. They also passed the B1-level examinations in English and Spanish, thereby meeting the eligibility criteria.
Plan Evalúa introduces standardised assessment grids in schools across the Canary Islands
Uniform assessment grids apply to early years care and the curriculum diversification programme in schools in the Canary Islands under the ‚Plan Evalúa‘. According to the Directorate of Education, these are intended to make it easier for teachers to carry out objective assessment and marking. The regulations are set out in this resolution.
The two appendices form part of the ‚Plan Evalúa‘, which has been in place since the 2023/2024 school year. In the context of early years care, ‚AD‘ denotes an adequate level of performance, ‚PA‘ a lower level, whilst ‚MA‘ and ‚EX‘ denote higher levels. In the curriculum diversification programme, these competence levels correspond to ‚IN‘, ‚SU/BI‘, ‚NT‘ and ‚SB‘.
