Since 30 September, the Canary Islands have had a public network of local climate protection areas. Local authorities can select suitable buildings and green spaces to provide protection from heat and Calima, and then publish this information on a digital map.

The network is supported by the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, in collaboration with the Canary Islands Association of Municipalities (FECAM). Each municipality decides for itself whether to take part. The regulations are set out in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.

The shelters are intended for people exposed to extreme heat, heatwaves or intense Calima winds. According to the government, temperatures in towns and cities can differ by more than 10 degrees from those in the surrounding countryside.
