“El Sonajero de Polichinela” brings the world of the Commedia dell'arte back to life in a musical theatre adaptation. The script is by José Carlos Campos, who also directs, whilst Manuel Gómez Ruiz is the musical director. The performance takes place in the Sala de Cámara at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The cast comprises six singing performers and three musicians. The ensemble, featuring violin, harpsichord and viola da gamba, accompanies a programme of arias, recitatives, duets and madrigals. The programme features works by Claudio Monteverdi, Francesca Caccini, Barbara Strozzi and Adriano Banchieri.
The production is a comedy of mistaken identity exploring the relationship between masters and servants, drawing on the typical devices of the Commedia dell'arte, including stock characters, masks and distinctive gestures.
