The exhibition at the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias La Palma is intended as a retrospective of the work of Maribel Nazco, who was born in Los Llanos de Aridane in 1938 and has influenced many generations of artists in the Canary Islands. It is her first exhibition on her home island of La Palma. On display is a selection of more than 80 works from public and private collections.
On display are paintings and sculptures, drawings, metal collages, prints and graphic works. These are complemented by documents, photographs, publications and archive material. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey from her early works to her most recent creations. It does not strictly follow a chronological order, but instead organises the works partly according to creative phases, conceptual connections, working processes and materials.
Maribel Nazco studied Fine Art at the Universidad de La Laguna and later maintained close ties with the university, where she also served as dean. In the 1960s, she was a member of the 'Nuestro Arte' group, alongside Pedro González, Enrique Lite and other artists. In recent years, her work has received renewed attention, including her participation in ARCOmadrid 2025, the inclusion of a work in the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the award of the Premio Canarias de Bellas Artes in 2021.
The current retrospective is curated by Severo Acosta, a pupil and friend of the artist and an expert on her work. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.
