The reading group is part of the free cultural programme at the Tenerife Peñón Fest, which takes place in October in Santa Cruz. The group will be discussing Nina Simone's memoirs, “Víctima de mi hechizo. Memorias de Nina Simone”, published under the name Eunice K. Waymon. The session aims to provide an insight into the musician through her own recollections and to use this as a basis for a group discussion about her work, her political activism and the position of women in music history.
The event will be led by the writer and journalist Anabel Vélez. She focuses in particular on the presence of women in music and culture; she is the communications manager at the Barcelona Film Commission, editor-in-chief of Culturaca and a regular contributor to Ruta 66. Her publications include, amongst others, 'Rockeras', 'Mujeres del rock. Su historia', 'Mujeres en las series', 'Rockeras de la A a la Z' and 'Divas del pop de la A a la Z'.
The event will last two hours and will take place on the terrace of the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Admission is free. To attend, you must register in advance using the official festival activities form, as places may be limited.
