In this Envite league, the neighbourhoods of the municipality of Candelaria compete against one another, turning a Canary Islands card game into a festive competition. Envite is a traditional Canary Islands card game in which bluffing and vocalised bids are part of the game. The round in Barranco Hondo forms part of the Fiestas and marks the transition from the sports weekend to the main days of the programme.
The Envite League is one of the more low-key, family-oriented parts of the fiestas in Barranco Hondo. The game is played between the villages of the municipality of Candelaria, which compete against one another in this tournament. As such, the event serves both as a meeting place for the local communities and as a friendly sporting contest within the festival programme.
Envite is considered a card game deeply rooted in the Canary Islands. It is played in pairs, often noisily and with an important tactical element: part of each round involves making your opponent believe something that isn't true. This is precisely why this league is one of the typical features of a village festival, combining gameplay, excitement and socialising.
In the programme of festivities, the Envite League is the first event following the sporting weekend. It thus marks the transition to the main days of the fiestas.
