"Él. From Darkness to Light" is a new opera based on the autobiographical novel "Él" and the poetic memoirs of the writer from the Canary Islands, Mercedes Pinto. It centres on a woman's journey, which leads her from idealised love, through suffering and subjugation, to a step out of darkness and into the light.
The music and libretto were written by the composer from the Canary Islands, Laura Vega. The opera does not confine itself to violence in the private sphere, but also highlights the social structures that have silenced women for decades.
The production is a co-production between the CajaCanarias Foundation, the LittleOpera Festival in Zamora and the Teatro Solís in Montevideo. It will be staged at the Teatro Leal in La Laguna. The performance begins at 20:00; admission costs 10 euros.
