Pilgrimage of the Cristo de Paso Alto in El Toscal
This pilgrimage is a key event in the festivities held in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de Paso Alto in El Toscal. The procession sets off from the Cruz de San Agustín near the Casa Pisaca, winds its way through Santiago and San Isidro streets, and ends at the Museo de Almeyda with a traditional Canary Islands mass. The day brings together faith, music, customs and the history of the neighbourhood.
The pilgrimage is one of the highlights of the El Toscal Fiestas. The procession begins at the Cruz de San Agustín, near Casa Pisaca at 95 Calle Santiago. From there, the route winds through Calle Santiago and Calle San Isidro to the Museo de Almeyda.
At the destination, a traditional mass from the Canary Islands is celebrated. Sources describe the event as a day that brings together devotion, cultural heritage, music and the neighbourhood's folk traditions.
Today's pilgrimage builds on an older tradition. It was revived in memory of a folk procession that the residents of El Toscal had held since the late 18th century. Through this, they gave thanks to the Santísimo Cristo de Paso Alto for protecting the town during the English attack led by Horatio Nelson.
