Preliminary rounds of the adult murga competition

During the Santa Cruz Carnival, adult murgas compete against one another over four evenings at the Recinto Ferial. The groups sing satirical lyrics about the past year, accompanied by percussion, wearing their own costumes and performing a rehearsed stage routine in front of the jury. These evenings are among the most popular indoor events of the carnival and thrive on the atmosphere in the stands.

The preliminary rounds of the competition will take place from 1 to 4 February 2027, starting at 20:30 each evening at the Recinto Ferial de Tenerife in Santa Cruz. Each session is a qualifying round in which the murgas perform one after the other before the jury. Only a selection of the groups will progress to the next stages and on to the final.

At the Tenerife Carnival, a murga is a large singing group comprising dozens of members. The competition features newly written, humorous and critical lyrics about the events of the year, driving percussion, original costumes and a stage performance that takes months to prepare. In addition to the lyrics, intonation, rhythm and staging are also key factors.

The evenings take place in the large, covered Recinto Ferial in the harbour area, which is the usual venue for the carnival competitions. The audience experiences long sessions featuring several groups each evening. Those who understand the local references in the lyrics will pick up on additional layers of meaning, but the atmosphere in the hall carries the evening well beyond that.
