The procession of decorated pivas is a relatively new tradition in La Vega and has been celebrated since 1995. Pivas are small agricultural vehicles with trailers which, for many years in the Canary Islands, were used for field work, transporting goods and equipment, and tilling the soil. In La Vega, they are decked out with palm leaves, flags and other decorations for the procession.
The procession winds its way along the district's main street. During the procession, romeros accompany the proceedings with tajaraste, a form of music and dance from the Canary Islands performed with drums and flutes. Behind them comes a line of decorated pivas. People from the neighbourhood stand on the trailers, handing out food and drink to those present.
Originally, the celebration was held without any religious symbols and was led only by a flag from the Canary Islands. Today, the images of Saint Nicholas and Our Lady of the Rosary also take part and are an integral part of the procession. The event forms part of the La Vega festivities in October and is scheduled to begin at 20:00.
