The focus is on choral sound, solo voices and the call-and-response interplay typical of gospel music. The programme pays tribute to the history of the genre, from its origins to more urban variations. The Black Heritage Choir is a selection of singers from the Mississippi Mass Choir and is conducted by Mr Jerry Calvin Smith for this concert. The ensemble interprets “The Soul of Gospel” as a tribute to the genre, spanning the spectrum from its origins on the plantations to later urban forms. The programme combines large-scale choral singing with solo parts, without allowing the harmony of the choir to fade into the background.
A striking feature of the artistic approach is that all performers play a defining role in the overall sound. It is precisely this that gives rise to the immediate character of gospel, which, when performed live, thrives on rhythm, vocal power and the sense of community. The music also reveals its connections to other genres that gospel has historically incorporated, including jazz, blues, country and hip-hop.
The concert lasts around 90 minutes. Admission is permitted from the age of five. Once the doors are closed at the start of the performance, no further entry will be permitted. Tickets cost 39 euros.
