The production is intended as an exploration of democratic memory and of a historical figure who, according to the production, has often been oversimplified or sidelined. The focus is not on a chronological account of his life, but on a fragmentary perspective on Juan Negrín López. The play situates the story within an inner space between scholarly reason, political responsibility, defeat and exile.
Teatro La República explicitly describes the theatre as a place of debate. 'El último presidente' does not seek to explain the past, but rather to allow it to resonate in the present. This raises questions about democracy, political engagement and how a society treats those who bore responsibility in times of crisis.
