Canary Islands record sharpest unemployment fall in September

The Canary Islands are bucking the Spanish trend for September. The sector breakdown and developments in new contracts and unemployment benefits complete the picture.

The number of unemployed people registered with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of September rose in all autonomous communities except two, including the Canary Islands, which saw the sharpest fall, with 4,156 fewer unemployed people than in August – a decrease of 2.88 per cent.

This monthly fall in unemployment was led by the province of Las Palmas, with 2,224 fewer people out of work, whilst the figure for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was 1,932 fewer people.

On an annual basis, unemployment in the Canary Islands fell by 5,070 people, a decrease of 3.49 per cent, bringing the total number of unemployed to 140,303, according to figures released on Friday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy.

Canary Islands: Unemployment falls across all economic sectors

Of those 140,303 unemployed people, 2,093 are in agriculture, 5,127 in industry, 11,343 in construction, 110,848 in services and 10,892 are people who have never worked; in these sectors, unemployment fell in September compared with August by 176, 112, 200, 4,078 and 410 people, respectively.



The Canary Islands ended the ninth month of 2026 with 207,317 jobseekers, of whom 35,421 were in work and 150,102 were not in work – a group which includes the 140,303 registered unemployed.

On a monthly basis, the number of unemployed jobseekers fell by 4,851, a decrease of 3.13 per cent; on an annual basis, this represented a fall of 4,653, a decrease of 3.01 per cent.

Employment contracts rose significantly in September

In September, 69,644 contracts were signed in the Canary Islands, 9,764 more – an increase of 16.31 per cent – than in August, and 2,203 more – an increase of 3.27 per cent – than in the same month of 2025.

Of these, 31,341 were permanent contracts and 38,303 were fixed-term contracts; the number of permanent contracts rose by 25.23 per cent compared with August and by 4.19 per cent compared with the same month last year, whilst the number of fixed-term contracts rose by 9.90 per cent and 2.53 per cent, respectively.

In August, 29,646 claims for unemployment benefit were made in the Canary Islands, of which 27,460 were approved within an average of 0.51 days, bringing the total number of recipients to 103,330 people, with the benefits amounting to an expenditure of 119.3 million euros.
