Teodoro Sosa, the CC-Primero Canarias candidate for the Congress of the Canary Islands representing Las Palmas, has called on the public to defend the islands‘ interests in the forthcoming general election, in the face of the ideological polarisation which, in his view, is being fuelled by other parties.
«This is not the time to talk about ideological divides when the needs of the Canary Islands are currently a priority. Housing, improving services, bilateral agreements, our historic powers… let’s not take a step backwards; there is a great deal at stake,» said Sosa following the presentation of his party’s electoral lists to the Provincial Electoral Commission.
The nationalist candidate has emphasised the importance of local councillors standing alongside CC on a joint list, because their electoral alliance aims to «regain a voice for this province of Las Palmas in the Congress of Deputies and the Senate».
Canary Islands: Sosa warns against the loss of historic rights
«It is a historic step,» argued the mayor of Gáldar (Gran Canaria), who believes that, in the face of political polarisation, we must defend «this land first, our needs and our rights first; speaking out is now more important than at any other time in our democratic history».
In his view, there is a real danger of regression, of decentralisation, of losing individual rights and also of losing historic rights won through the efforts of Canarian nationalism.
Election polls suggest CC will not win any seats in Congress
With regard to the polls on voting intentions, which suggest that his political party would fail to win any seats in the Congress of Deputies, he has expressed confidence that the opposite will be the case.
«We’re going to have a say there; I’m certain of it, I can feel it on the streets. We won’t show up in the polls, we never do, because the polls are conducted 2,000 kilometres away and they don’t understand the reality of our towns; they don’t understand the reality of our islands,» he said.
During the election campaign, CC-Primero Canarias «will speak directly about the needs of the public», as «no one is going to put forward a Canarian programme; no one is going to explain the needs relating to the coastline, airports, ports, migration, they have left us abandoned, regional funding, road agreements, employment agreements, coastal agreements or tourism. «These are the needs of the people,» said Sosa.
